— Yoga Nundah

We are a small, friendly community of all ages that practice gentle mindful yoga together for the physical and mental health benefits. Whether you are brand new to yoga and mindfulness or you’re back from a break or a regular yogi, we can help you to ease in and have a positive and relaxing experience that you’ll feel in your body, mind and heart.

Hello! I’m Gaylia

(aka fellow traveler in this crazy life)

A 350 hour yoga teacher, I’m also a personal trainer, pilates matwork instructor with further qualifications in wellness coaching and counselling. I’m in my final year of my Bachelor of Counselling (hence my constant banging on about mental health). Without a doubt, my most favourite role is that of being a ‘Mumma’.

My mission is to facilitate a beneficial experience of yoga and mindfulness to all those who come and share our safe space. To expand beyond any fixation on physical flexibility or the belief that yoga is something to be ‘good at’. Yoga is so much more than this and each person has the opportunity to connect with their own personal experience, enjoy their own company, learn to self regulate which can have positive ripples into the rest of their life and those around them.

In my spare time, I’m a portrait photographer and I have more books on my ‘to read / listen’ pile than I know what to do with.

FAQs

Why would I want to come to Yoga Nundah?

Our main reason for being is to create a safe space for our community to make time to really care for themselves. Life is hard but we learn to ride the waves! Making regular time to give your nervous system time to rest, take a 60 minute break from your ‘head’ and lovingly move your body or be still is the ultimate act of self care. Your first class is free so come and try for yourself. If it’s not for you, that’s ok. Finding your yoga home and ideal teacher is a very personal thing. There are so many great places to practice in our beautiful city of Brisbane.

Gentle mindful yoga? Does that mean I won’t get a workout?

Firstly, the physical aspect of yoga (asana) is only one eighth of the eight limbs of yoga. Secondly, when not teaching yoga, I’m personal trainer. In our time together, please be assured that you’ll be moved (or brought into stillness) in all planes of your body to support the functional movement and mobility of your body. Many people come to yoga with sore back and / or tight hips so we give these areas plenty of love. If you are wanting to perfect your splits or headstands, you may not find what you are looking for here.

But I’m not flexible……..

If I had a dollar for every time I have heard this… I’m going to let you in on a secret. I can’t touch my toes without bending my knees. Still. So what! Every body is unique. The length of our bones and our joint orientation can play a big part in ‘flexibility’. In saying that, the more we move our bodies and expose our joints to healthy stress, the more functional and mobile we can be. That old saying ‘use it or lose it’ really is true. Our yoga community is the perfect place to come exactly as you are and care for your own body in a gentle and mindful way. You will be encouraged to modify any shapes or come into rest whenever you feel you need to. It’s YOUR practice and we are a judgement free zone.

I can’t mediate, I’ve tried before and I just can’t do it.

This is another thing I hear often. Please be assured that this is very normal. Our minds are designed to scan the environment for danger and to keep us safe. Unfortunately, our minds have not kept up with the changing world. We are no longer on the constant run from dinosaurs (although sometimes our boss might feel just as threatening), most of the time, here in Brisbane, we are physically safe. Mindfulness is being awake in the present moment and it can be practiced anytime at all (very useful when driving a car). Mindfulness meditation is the more formal version where you sit, stand or lay down with the intention of being present, without judgement. Your mind WILL wander off at some stage and once you realise, you begin again. And again. And again. Our brains are very malleable based on how we train them (neuroplasticity). Everyone has the ability be more mindful with practice, if they want to. In our classes, you’ll be guided for the full duration of the class and at the end our time together, you’ll be able to say that you’ve meditated for an hour! True!
